On the rocky road from the Mountain Lion to 10.9.4, several things happened.

An old HD died. Got replaced, got more RAM. Until 9.4, things were pretty
ordinary, old software cleaned out and anything that was not doing useful
trashed, as as well as some things that were definitely unwelcome - all gone.

But Mail! Not really doing what I was used to. A trip to Daniel Kerr and
improvements seen. But the random appearance of a warning that I was not
ejecting an external disk was a worry. ( was it a cable connection? What?)

Worse! The need for a new replacement HD… and the best way out of that and more
was a refurbished 13” Macbook Pro.

Then on to 10.9.4. The only real benefit I can see is that the random warning
has gone!

If there is a moral here I do not know what it is, but approximates to the “if
it ain’t broke - don’t fix it”.

So what price Yosemite??
