Woman Embroiled in Legal Battle Cries Foul

JEDDAH, 20 April 2006 - A Saudi woman has been embroiled in a maze of legal battles. The problems began when her brother convinced the court to declare her his dependent. His aim in doing so, according to Al-Riyadh Arabic daily, was to steal her inheritance.
The woman, in her forties, has asked the court to correct the injustice done to her. She told the court that much of the information on which its decision was based had been false. She was said to be a divorcee when in fact she was happily married. However, after she was denied her inheritance and drawn into a protracted legal battle, her husband did divorce her.
The woman says that the court accepted what it was told by her brother and never verified his claims. Now she is shuttling between courts in Riyadh, where she lives, and Dammam, where her brother lives.
She explained, "My married life has been destroyed and my reputation damaged. My brother is trying to take my share of our father's estate. He persuaded a court in Dammam to make me his dependent even though at the time, I was living with my husband. Using the document, from the court, he has been trying to force me to move from Riyadh to Dammam against my wishes."
The document gives her brother the power to decide where she should live and travel in addition to allowing him some control of her property. She said the court in Dammam had altered the dependency document to what is known as a kinship certificate without bothering to cancel the original document. These two documents have confused her legal status and deprived her of many of her rights.
In another move, her brother asked a Riyadh court to restrict her movements on the basis of the document issued by the court in Dammam. The legal situation has been further confused by her other brothers joining forces with the one who lives in Dammam. She is now involved in a total of seven cases, four in Dammam and three in Riyadh. They include a defamation case against her brothers who made baseless statements aimed at character assassination.
She is unhappy about the way the judges have handled the case and says they do not accept her statements nor investigate her evidence. They act solely on the basis of what her brothers say.
