What's with Opie's shirt?

I've been watching the first season of the COLOR episodes and have noticed something peculiar. Opie wears the same shirt in every episode. Now, we are not talking about a white shirt or a neutral color, we're looking at a large plaid rainbow colored garment. Can't figure out why this was done. W
