In regard to Barney's quickly turning to another girl after learning of Thelma Lou's marriage, I really feel that after showing how excited he would be to see her again and then seeming so disappointed when he thought she wouldn't be there, he had shown how much he still cared for her. It was embarrassing to him that she had not only married someone else but was apparently happy. It was a shock and it hurt... so when Nettie gave him attention, it was his chance to save face and more or less tell anyone watching...
