While switching channels on the TV last night, the Grammys Award Show was
putting on a picture of famous music people who died in 2008 and they played a
brief soundtrack of their work. I stopped changing the channel as I recognized
a few of the music themes being played and some were very noteable. Then they
played The Fishin' Hole with a picture of Earl Hagen for his work as one of
the creators. That was nice to see. Even my wife noticed that Mayberry is
everywhere! I was fortunate to get Earl to autograph a copy of the Fishin' Hole
music score when he attended the Mayberry Days Celebration in Mt. Airy a few
years ago and also his book - Memories of a Famous Composer Nobody Ever heard
Of. Earl had a great career, starting out with the Benny Goodman and Tommy
Dorsey bands and later wrote the themes and backgrounds for over 3,000 TV
shows. That is not a typo - over 3,000. All of them were really great works and
it is certainly hard to say one was better than any other but obviously The
Fishin' Hole stands out as one of the best. Earl was a very talented man who
shared some of his work with us.- The Gollywobbler
