I just watched that, too. (Watched that, too! Watched that, too!) I just always assumed Opie was right: it's a cup for keeping mustaches in. As many will have pointed out, they actually kept the mustache dry and free from tea-stains. It also kept the mustache wax from melting. I guess there's an all-new era of mustache cups these days: disposable cups with lids having a small drinking hole. The purpose, of course, is to keep the coffee from spilling, but even Floyd's little mustache would surely stay dry and stain-free.
