Curt, I believe you misread the wiki information. Andy Griffith and Ron Howard did indeed guest star in the GOMER PYLE USMC episode "Opie Joins the Marines" (2nd season)...
Opie runs away from home after a failing grade, and shows up in Gomer's barracks at Camp Henderson, hoping to join the Marines and "make his Pa proud of him again." After some unexpected help from Sgt.
