In response to Jimmy Phillips inquiry about miniature statues of the Andy
and Opie statue like the ones in Pullen Park in Raleigh, N.C., and in Andy
Griffith's hometown of Mount Airy, N.C., I, too, thought miniature statues
would have been a great collectible and fundraising idea. When the idea for
the first statue was announced, I contacted the artist who was commissioned
to do the life-size statue and they embraced the idea of doing two different
versions in miniature, one in bronze and the other in artist's resin. The
idea never came off the ground between TV Land execs and Andy Griffith who
would have had to approve such a project.
I also contacted Jamie Lester, artist that is planning to do the Don
Knotts statue for his Don's hometown of Morgantown, W. Va., if sufficient
funds are raised, and he says if a miniature statue is done, examples would
only be presented to the donors who donated large sums of money for the
project. I suggested still doing minatures in some other composition than
bronze and of a collectible size that could possibly raise the funds needed
to complete the bigger statue. We can only hope
