When I was a kid, we'd do that but not as specifically.  We'd say the alphabet 
and the letter where the stem fell off was the initial of the person we'd 
marry.  Does that mean I'm second cousin, twice removed to the Darlings?  If 
so, it's my fifteen minutes of fame.
