I am reading the book *The Wild Hog Murders *by Bill Crider and I just came
to a part where someone asks the sheriff about making a citizen's arrest.
Here is the dialog.
"Whatever. Anyway, you said it yourself back at the jail. You're not a
peace officer. You can't arrest any
From Neal Bower’s “Mayberry 101” comes this explanation of Gomer’s comment to
Barney in the Citizen’s Arrest episode:
The phrase was apparently first introduced on television in the 1963 episode of
The Andy Griffith Show. It was put in the “Citizens Arrest” script by show
writer Everette

Citizen's Arrest. Gomer tells Barney ?You just go up an alley and holler
fish.? This was after Barney gave Gomer a ticket for making a U-Turn.
Not sure what it means.

This is a very informative article that explains the phrase in detail -

Howard should've ignored with a grin. Andy didn't arrest him cuz in
those days, men were allowed to settle their differences without the law

I was watching the color episode where Opie was trying to get a job to pay for
his bike repairs. Andy came into the house and was talking about his day and
how bad it was. He mentioned that Otis had gotten a snoot full and drove his
car into a ditch or something. I thought that Otis had said
Eric, not only did Otis get arrested on Sept 23, 1941, he was also arrested in
a very early episode "Ellie Runs For City Council", for hitting his
mother-in-law in the mouth with a leg of lamb. When Otis tries to leave the
courthouse, Andy reminds him that he is under arrest.
I caught an apparent contradiction concerning Otis being arrested. On 'The
Rehabilitation of Otis" he indignantly protested to Barney that he had never
been arrested while Barney was slapping on handcuffs.
On a few episodes later, "The Punch in the Nose" Andy finds a file in the
courthouse that
Is it any wonder Howard was arrested for possession of drugs. Why, with
all that medication he has for his deviated septum and nasal conditions, he

I just listened to the DVD on Netflix and on that one Otis says Wally's

Maybe someone else can testify they heard it too on the TV Land version?
Though I am not doubting you Dave.
Maybe it was corrected later on the DVD's version Netflix has?

"I could swear he tells Barney who is in the other cell that Floyd's filling

Dave, I can see how it sounded like that, but if you listen carefully, he

I don't have the DVD so I can't go back and

No, not the episode with Gomer running around yelling "citizens arrest" , but

While he's doing this Andy is nonchantly eating grapes sitting out in front of

Did you hear about Barney's latest arrest? Well, it seems Mrs. Ambrose

No sooner did she hand Jeremy to Barney and leave when poor little Jeremy

I know I know, Otis was first arrested Sept. 23 1941 at 2:00pm at the Mayberry
garden club flower show. He was passed out in somebodies poppies. And the
reason I know Mr Schump told me. He was standing in a stag line. If you don't
believe him check episode 152 "a punch in the nose". Personally

I heard on the radio today that the TV critic's column of the USA Today paper
