I don't know if there was air conditioning or not but I've noticed a board at the base of each window. That board, a broad panel, was used so when the windows were open the air would be directed towards the celing. That would cause the air to circulate better. I worked in a place, a long time ago, with no AC, and we had those type boards on the windows.
