Like Brenda Jo, I grew up in a small town in WV. We could walk to town to
get an ice cream, go to the library, or to spend our little allowances at
the dime store. To be honest, if I had a child now, I wouldn't let him or
her walk to town (depending on age, of course) alone or even with friends.
I live in the same small town that I grew up in, but people and times are
changing and I wouldn't feel safe letting a child walk into town now. There
are lots of people that I don't know here, and it is sad that things have to
change so much. But when I was growing up, I knew that even if I wasn't at
my own house, there were lots of people who knew my parents and wouldn't
hesitate to tell them if I was up to something that I shouldn't be. That
type of thing isn't common anymore, at least around here. I never even
heard of children being abducted or things like that when I was growing up,
and unfortunately, the world isn't as safe as it used to be. But here in my
small town, even in the 70's, Leon and his "sammich" would've been just as
safe as he was in Mayberry in the 60's. I think it was because people
looked out for one another and for one another's children in small towns in
those days. Wow, I really was blessed to grow up like that! Thanks for the
memories, everyone!! :) Lisa
