I, and a few others, have been pushing the author of Codemirror for a Python parser for Codemirror. He has answered by putting up a bounty for the project. The reason I bring this here is because I believe Codemirror to be superior under-the-hood than Editarea for in-browser code editing (it is much faster and handles large files well). If Codemirror could handle Python well then it would be a viable alternative to Editarea (it would need a toolbar added, but that's much easier than writing a parser).
