I have no idea how they did that, though.

But even so, a notice on the Wiki, with the person to contact to get an invite 
(if someone would volunteer for that), would really be nice. So people don't 
have to bother the whole list...

To avoid spam, don't put an email there, just a name should be sufficient. 
Someone who can't figure out the email from the name shouldn't be in the Slack 
channel anyway ;)

I don't think a mailing list and a chat can really be combined in a meaningful 
way, it's an entirely different form of communication.
