That's what I was waiting for. I think it's a really great idea – no
need to calculate a random string as WO has already done this, and
uniqueness is guaranteed due to the prefix.

go for a random string. I contemplated SHA, but as I don't need to
actually encrypt any information, just link to it, I don't believe it
adds any functionality to me (as Jacob pointed out).

I had thought about doing that, but wouldn't the keys be sequential,
making guessing valid urls trivial? I suppose you could generate your
own primary keys but wouldn't it be adding more complexity to
otherwise just a (long) random string?

I could just create random strings and put them as a keys to the users.

I am about to start creating a WO application that will mainly be
used internally, but will let external people update their own details.
To do this, a url would be emailed out to the people in question, and
clicking on the link will take them to their details.

I would expect that it is fine to add these tags. The problem will
probably be that RSS readers won't know what to do with them, and
they will be ignored (which could be what you are wanting).
