Those are not Unicode characters, they are HTML entities encoding Unicode
characters.
If you want a special character, such as a degree sign, which cannot be
encoded in 7 bits, you need to encode it somehow. There are two practical
choices: HTML entities, or UTF-8. WeeWX allows you to go either wa
