I know some time ago, a gtk frontend got started for wengo. What is the
current status of this gtk client? I'd like to get involved... could
someone please enlighten me?

Haven't had much time to look through the source. I do agree with you
though. Perhaps using a higher level language would be a good idea. C#
is particularly nice, but then you depend on the .net runtime. I have
developed gtk apps in both C as well as C#. Perhaps using the gtkmm
bindings
