KASESE SHOOTINGS

I once said that colloquial ideologies are fuelling mediocrity.
The disturbing images from Kasese are now being used to further intimidate
the Ugandan people.
It is unfortunate that the army spokeperson today wrote: "These attackers
in Kasese had a real hard time. No one should ever think that it is such
easy business to attack security forces."
Isn't that rhetoric suited to discuss radical Al-terrorists from war torn
Somalia? Is the officer now expecting heroism medals and applause from
civilized society after Ugandans died?
Meanwhile, the general public is shocked, and mostly saying police used
excessive lethal force against an unarmed individual whom they executed.
Police should use his running towards them to apprehend him and take him to
court as their training and arrest procedures dictate.
The assessments transpiring from this incident show a rift between an
intimidatist military, and a sober public opinion.
It has been repeatedly said that security forces should be protecting
rather than shooting Ugandans.
Who should a purportedly "pro-people" army be listening to?
And when police is massively deployed against the people while armed with
battle weaponry, a mentality since the 1980's, what intentions are behind
such marching orders?
Even if the leadership doesn't mention it, our young brothers, sisters and
relatives in uniform are being set up to produce harrowing scenes if the
people refuse to be intimidated.
In conclusion, I call on the leadership to first start actively valuing
Ugandan citizens.
