MIGINGO ISLAND DISPUTE: A peaceful settlement is long overdue (7 years
already?)
If as we claim, the island belongs to Kenya, and the Lake Victoria waters
belong to Uganda, then what is preventing us from simply giving Kenya back
their territory? Obviously we (Ugandans) aren't serious. Promoting regional
integration does not tally with occupying territory already admitted to
belong to a fellow East African Community member state.
In fact it creates suspicions about probable selfish motives.
We can expect zero progress on the East African political federation for
now. It's like shooting oneself in the foot, wanting to take the first East
African presidency while unknowingly blocking it from becoming reality. The
Kenyan and Tanzanian leaders have remained courteous, but they aren't
stupid. On the contrary, if we look closer, our neighbours are wide awake
on the issue, and it has grim ulterior meanings to them. Do we honestly
think they don't know that Uganda could just order its three policemen off
the island?
