$wgUseGzip is specifically for the old-fashioned local file-based caching, and
is not used anywhere else. If you are not using $wgUseFileCache, then it will
have no effect.

The basic problem is that the text-drawing routine used (imagestring()) only
supports 8-bit fonts.

I haven't tried profiling, but tossing a /u on in
SpamRegexBatch::buildRegexes() doesn't seem to break at least. It should
however be double-checked with the full-size blacklists.

I got the latest version of both SMW (1.5.5)and SMW+ (1.5.2).

Can you double-check what $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] returns? Sounds like we have
