Yes, this is intentional. We could reconsider it but I worry that the
additional slowness to support certain broken browsers in this respect (I
believe the main issue here is Firefox) is not worth the minor user experience
improvement.

Note that the "delete" and "backspace" keys still work to delete the selection.
