Robert Louis Stevenson Day Wikipedia editathon – Saturday 12 November

This is a final call for tomorrow’s Edinburgh Gothic
event<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:University_of_Edinburgh/Events_and_Workshops/Edinburgh_Gothic>
at the National Library of Scotland for Robert Louis Stevenson Day.

This free event includes:

· Access to the Robert Louis Stevenson exhibition area.

· Gothic badge-making activities using original collage designs by Tessa
Asquith-Lamb.

· The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde’ stickers and souvenir
certificates printed on the Treasure Island press;

· “Jekyll and Hyde: Illustrating Stevenson’s characters”: a presentation
by National Library of Scotland curator, Andrew Martin.

· Lunch provided for free by the National Library of Scotland and
possibly also some moustache cookies too.

· The Gothic Wikipedia editathon itself which will take place with
exclusive access to the National Library of Scotland’s reading room after it
has closed to the public with its focus on improving the quality of articles
about all things Gothic; be it creating a page for Robert Louis Stevenson's
short story 'Thrawn Janet'; be it improving content on Angela Carter, Alasdair
Gray, Louise Welsh or Ali Smith; or even improving Gothic architecture pages or
Gothic film pages such as the Ken Russell's movie, 'Gothic'

Come along to learn about how Wikipedia works and contribute a greater
understanding of Gothic. Book

Festival of Architecture Wikipedia
editathon<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:University_of_Edinburgh/Events_and_Workshops/Festival_of_Architecture_2016>

We are also putting on an evening editathon on Wednesday 16th November 3pm to
7.30pm in Room 1.12 of the Edinburgh University Main Library to mark the end of
the Festival of Architecture 2016<http://www.foa2016.com/>. So many names,
especially women
architects<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Red/Architecture>,
are missing from Wikipedia, the #1 Information
site<http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2016/05/people-love-wikipedia/482268/>,
so if you’d like to take part and help redress the balance then you’d be more
than welcome.

Full training is given along with suggested pages to work on (although feel
free to suggest your own!). There are only 3000 or so very active Wikipedians
in the world curating the world’s knowledge (which amounts to the size of a
small town like Kinghorn in Fife... or half the size of North Berwick) so if
you’d like to contribute to sharing knowledge globally and are interested in
architecture, even if it is just to share some openly-licensed pictures to
Wikimedia Commons, then please do come along. Book your place and find out more
here.<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:University_of_Edinburgh/Events_and_Workshops/Festival_of_Architecture_2016>

In remembrance
Finally, as today is all about remembrance, I thought I’d share with you the
outcomes of the Halloween
Wikipedia<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:University_of_Edinburgh/Events_and_Workshops/Between_the_worlds_of_the_living_and_the_dead>
event as there are now some fantastic pages on notable lives that were just
not there before, including:

· Recognising the scientific work of Katherine Clerk
Maxwell<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katherine_Clerk_Maxwell>

· Professor William Lindsay
Renwick<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Lindsay_Renwick>, the founder of
the School of Scottish Studies at Edinburgh University (also commemorated on
the Glasgow School of Art’s WW1 Roll of Honour).

· Ernest Francis
Bashford<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Francis_Bashford> the influential
British oncologist who pioneered the biological approach to the study of cancer.

· Brenda Moon<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brenda_Moon> – the first
female chief of a university library in Scotland who played a role in bringing
Edinburgh University Library into the digital age.

· Janet Anne Galloway <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janet_Anne_Galloway>
(1841–1909) promoted higher education for women in Scotland. As a result of
the limited educational opportunities open to women, Janet became an active
supporter of the movement for higher education provision for women.

Full outcomes are detailed
here<http://thinking.is.ed.ac.uk/wir/2016/11/10/samhuinn/> and you can find the
Storify with pics & tweets<https://storify.com/emcandre/samhuinn> from the day
here<https://storify.com/emcandre/samhuinn>.
