I'm trying to build an autocompletion thingy that suggests categories
based on user input using the opensearch API [1].
I also did something similar for our wm-metrics [1], ended up with some
jqueryUI + cutting the prefix with a callback method [2] (I am JS-0.5 ;-)

.
You and I are two of the mere 11 users (is Special:Search is to be trusted)
to have activated this piece of JavaScript in their common.js :-)

I'm somewhat of a newb though with extracting microformat style
metadata, so its quite possible there is a better way, or some higher
level parsing library I could use (Something like xpath maybe,
although its not really xml I'm looking at).
I am not really proficient with that either ; but
scrape and do slightly ugly things
This [1] looks quite acrobatic indeed. Can’t we make better use of the
machine-readable markings provided by templates?

infrastructure?
Related : the French Wiktionary folks did that using a Wikisource dump
(I’ll agree that fr.wikisource is a tiny subset of « the web » ;)
See http://tools.wmflabs.org/dicompte/
Hope that helps,
