Why not both?
Author should appear for each extension, and maintainer as necessary.

I could see value in recording the original author and allowing that to be
replaced with the current maintainer (maybe past maintainers as well) to
prevent a long list of inactive users appearing in the infobox. Inactive
maintainers may also appreciate still receiving credit for their work with
