I am using SolarWinds (www.solarwinds.net) Orion network monitoring
package with their wireless package installed. I don't do much with the
wireless portion but when I need stats, I can usually find out what I
need from them.

I have had trouble with this as well. I have my switch ports
monitored and labeled (although my installation is probably much smaller
than yours) and that is how I keep track of up/down events.

on campus I have also configured the APs to have an additional
non-broadcast SSID as well. We haven't had any problems with the APs
running this way. I'm not sure what the limit on SSIDs per AP is but I
know that I haven't approached it yet.
