Vista has a bug in which a dual-ported machine can connect to a VPN server but then doesn't route through the tunnel because the lower metric route is via a disconnected interface. See:

My thrid-hand understanding is that Microsoft says only enterprises use VPN and enterprises should run WSUS and therefore it doesn't need to be in auto-update. We have WSUS but don't point student machines at it (so when they leave the university they will still get updates). If anyone else agrees that this patch should go into auto-update, please respond to me (NOT TO THE LIST!) and I will compile a list of enterprises for our conversation with Microsoft.
