Rice Krispies Treats Flags To make Rice Krispies Treats: 3 tablespoons margarine or butter 1 package (10 ounces or about 40) regular marshmallows or 4 cups miniature marshmallows 6 cups Kellogg's Rice Krispies cereal Start with Rice Krispies Treats. You can buy them already made in the cereal aisle, or follow the following recipe. To make "pops," insert craft sticks lengthwise into each treat before dipping. Melt margarine in large saucepan over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat. Add Rice Krispies cereal. Stir until well coated. Using buttered spatula or waxed paper, press mixture evenly into 13-by-9-by-2-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Cut into 2-inch squares when cool. Best if served the same day. Yield: 24 squares To decorate for July 4: Melt two 12-ounce bags of white chocolate morsels according to package directions. Dip each treat into the melted chocolate, wide side down, and allow excess to drain off. With a knife, "frost" the four narrow sides. The back of the treat can be left undipped. Place on lightly buttered cookie sheet or waxed paper and allow chocolate to set. Divide remaining white chocolate into two bowls and dye one red and one blue You must use paste colors, or candy dyes, available at baking supply stores (Moisture in liquid food coloring will cause the chocolate to harden.) Or purchase already dyed coating disks in red and blue, also available at baking supply stores, and melt in microwave oven. If dyed chocolate has begun to harden, melt a few seconds in microwave. Consistency should be like icing. If using coating disks, allow to cool and thicken slightly until it reaches icing consistency. With a knife and a dab of blue icing, form a square star field in one corner of each treat. Place rows of white decorating sprinkles or stars on the blue field. Spoon red icing into a pastry bag fitted with a writing tip, or use a plastic storage bag with one corner snipped off. Draw four red stripes lengthwise across each treat.
