Each new version of AOL uses whatever version of IE that was new at the time. Installing AOL also installs IE (the version that's on the AOL disc). Take a look at your friends computer and see what version of IE is there. That's the rendering engine his AOL is using. Hope that makes sense. There is a way to install multiple versions of I.E. on Win machines.
