Nice analogy and I totally agree ;-)

D. Keith Robinson writes at his weblog:
"In my opinion, at this point in time and for the foreseeable future, Web
standards, in and of themselves, have very little to do with the success,
or
lack thereof, of a Web site."

Haven't read the article but I'll pretend to have an informed opinion
anyway....

He has a point, but only just. Web standards do not, 'in and of
themselves',
guarantee the success of a site. Conversely the lack of web standards does
not doom a site to failure.

Right, now that sounds kind of obvious doesn't it?

A little analogy:

"In my opinion, at this point in time and for the foreseeable future, Air
Conditioning, in and of itself, has very little to do with the success, or
lack thereof, of a particular model of car."

Hmmm.... Michael Schumacher's F1 Ferrari does not, as far as I know, have
any air conditioning. But its pretty safe to say the car can be considered
"successful". There are other examples at the other end of the market,
really cheap & popular cars with no AC. Does this mean air conditioning is
evil? Or even a waste of time and effort? Should we turn our backs on air
conditioning forever?

The success, or otherwise, of a web site comes down to many different
factors;
- content & functionality,
- promotion & visibility,
- interface to content & functionality
- hardware & infrastructure
- other bits & bobs

I strongly believe that web standards can really be beneficial in an
interface to content & functionality. Its one extra little thing like air
conditioning that is not essential but should come standard on most models.

Cheers

Mark
