I also experience this slowdown, running debian testing on a quad core Q9550 with plenty of ram and a separate nvidia graphics card that does not use shared memory. No other drivers besides those included in the dist installed afaik. Running firefox with a few tabs open does not cause any

The slow down  may also be caused by a too slow CPU.and/or low system memory. I run PKS reporter, WSJT-x + MSHV at the same time (together with more power hungry programs like SUN SDR or SDR console,  which actually can use a Nvidia GPU for FFT) on an old second generation I7 without any problem.
