While you can operate perfectly “fine” without CAT control for many digital
modes (including plain vanilla FT8), you need to be mindful of the placement of
your transmitted signal to ensure you aren’t bumping against the edges of your
transmit filters, i.e. the high and low ends of the waterfall
You may run into bugs that were fixed from RC1 to RC2 (like the issue with
some callsigns being translated as telemetry and subsequent program crashes
as a result). That may end up being frustrating to you and to your QSO
partner.

Unfortunately, you’re going to see a lot of this for some time to come because
some people are apparently allergic to updating their software. Since they
were running RC1, they have a responsibility to check back often for updates
(the same goes for RC2).
