it's pretty well as you described, I have three rigs with WSJT-X connected,
all Icom in the mix, one has external USB sound card, the others have an
internal sound card and CAT from the rig. For me it is ONLY when I

I have never experienced the problem you are describing. The problem I see
is very easy to reproduce.
If you can come up with a way to reproduce the problem, I could take a shot
at it.

I am not sure that there would be any differences between sound cards in
different rigs as far as this feature goes.
I agree that the solution has to be generic, but I am just talking about
after the user hits OK, check to see if the connection is closed. If it is,
clean it up and open it agai

The QMX is no the only rig with 'built in' USB soundcard (examples include most
all ICOM rigs since 7200, and many others). It's not clear what the proposed
fix is, but it should be done in a general way that works for all such rigs.
