Using a 2.4 kernel isn't exactly going to prevent use of Xastir. What matters is that the libraries are as up to date as possible. Is there any particular reason why you don't want to upgrade the system to etch and/or install a 2.6 kernel (not as critical) on there? I'm running etch on a lot of
