I'm experimenting with the GIS maps from the NWS at
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/regsci/gis/shapefiles/
They work, with one caveat: They don't show up in the Map Chooser (even
on a map re-scan) if they have 0 shapes in the shape file.
Is there any way, or a pointer to the code to fix it myself an
Thanks very much to Jason KG4WSV and Chris KK5XF for the
scripts to read Xastir server ports. They were *very* helpful. I
ended up taking parts of these and adding them to the APRS
decoding script from Ian Wade, G3NRW. I needed to convert
the APRS packets into a different format for another GIS
Hello all,
Just a quick little update for anyone trying to run xastir under Vista.
Following the directions in README.win32 there may be some errors that
appear. In particular *"child_copy*: linked dll data write copy failed"
when you are running xastir. For me they were occurring with both

I noticed that you are using the link that points to only one NWS web
site. If this site is down or can not process the radar data you will
not receive the latest image.
The Url should be

The above URL is load balanced between the main N

My next thought is to look in the .geo file for the file and adjust
transparency there.

That just makes it dark, doesn't change the transparency...

You can adjust the map intensity under Map -> configure -> Map Intensity.

Is there any way I can make the radar images (e.g.
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ridge/RadarImg/N0R/HTX_N0R_0.gif) see-through,
so that they don't completely obscure data underneath?
I know I can bring the vector maps up on top of the raster image, but
I'd rather be able to see through the radar.
