Here is what I did. I saw that I had an older version of the
xastir.cnf file. I renamed the current one, then moved the older into
it's spot. It didn't work. But on the second try as the maps were
indexing I went into the interface control panel and made sure that

Regarding fonts; Xastir ran great for me at our last balloon launch
earlier this month, which makes all this even more of a mystery.
