It seems that Vincent Untz has recently fixed the Application category bug in gnome recently [0]. It seems to be fixed in 2.19.2 anyway. Of course that doesn't help people with older versions of Gnome though. I'll try to work up a patch soonish and send it to the list for more discussion, thanks.
