I think PSTricks (which is automatically available in plain XeTeX) should
allow this. See the PSTricks manual, and some sample code at:

PSTricks, living solely in a PDF world, but if as you say
PSTricks work with XeTeX, that would be a great plus.

I suspect you
just tried desperate measures--trashed the aux files and then ran the
typesetting again and it worked. So something must have been wrong
with an aux file.

In the same directory/folder as your LaTeX source.
Same name, but with .aux as the extension.
Any text editor should be able to open and read it.
