I am trying to configure Linux to run with a minimal set of
installed packages.
I have installed a system that did not include any GUI
components and then I installed XFree86-4.3.0 afterwards.
I can run xf86cfg which gives me a root screen with a
configuration window.

If you have got XFree86 4.3 or better try configuring it as root
with "XFree86 -configure"
It should write "XF86Config.new" to ./home. Check the file under
something like emacs for correct hardware reconition before
using it.
You dont need "modes" for the thing to work.

Ive got a geforce 4ti 4200 AGP8x and cant get the resolution above
1280x960. I'm running the latest nvidia drivers - are there any problems

yup. The driver uses the video bios to programme video modes. If a mode
is not listed in the BIOS you are, as they say, shit outta luck :-(

I have just installed Linux RedHat 9.0 on an emachines M5105 notebook (set

Well do you have an nvidia card or an ati radeon? support for both of
these cards was added after 4.3 was released so you will need to either
update to cvs or wait for 4.4 or maybe update to a newer redhat xfree86
rpm. the driver line in your config should read either

first off there are a few errors in your config:
remove these lines:
Option "CloneMode" "1280x1024"
Option "CloneHSync" "28-92"
Option "CloneVRefresh" "48-85"
Next this line is wrong:
Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS, TMDS"
TMDS is for DVI ports.

specify when running the patch, my videoram setting says 64m in my

then started x (after changing the depth from the cruddy 8 bit to 24,
and wohoo big clear picture :D

well... we did it. I am currently running X on my dell i1100 at a
sparkling depth of 24 and 1024x768. took days of tweaking. but my
significant other and i finally did it. As soon as he's polished it to
retain compatibility with other *nix's Ill have it available for public
consumption. :D:D
