Something catastrophic seems to have happened at a low-level. That "Cannot read colourmap from VGA" message seems to imply that writing or reading the video hardware has failed. Did you change something about the machine? For instance, some bios settings, or add a new PCI card?

That looks like an SiS driver bug. I don't know much about the SiS driver myself. Perhaps you could try one of the pre-4.4 XFree86 snapshots? Also, I think you may be able to use the sis driver from 4.2 with your 4.3 server. That is often possible. The server will load drivers older
