I used to run 4.3.0 with a Radeon 9200 card (pretendign I had the
ChipId 0x514d) and decent performance. glxgears said something about
1500 fps.

If you are refering to the "nv" driver that comes with XFree86,
it does not support TV-out, nor does it support dual-head operation.
Only single head operation on CRT or DVI is supported. Dual-head
and TV-out support are only available with NVIDIA's binary drivers.

With that card you can only get PseudoColor visuals
by running in depth 8. This is true of most cards.

Perhaps also, "uname -a" for the kernel version.
To me, your shmput500 benchmark looks reasonable for 32bpp.
The xvtest numbers seem overlay slow.

I have a DELL PC, with an Intel Extreme Graphics network card (865G
chipset) and a 15" LCD monitor (DELL 1504FP).
I have managed to get a 1024x768 resolution with 8 bits colors, but I
know that I could obtain better (on the Windows side, I get 1024x768
with 32 bits colors).
My lcd didn't need a modeline after all that.
I changed my XF86Config to 'default' instead of a specified modeline and it
worked just fine ! :/

and which offer themselves as one of the hosts in the
chooser list.
I achieve this on each box by first starting an Xserver
with the -indirect option pointing to the box itself,
and then starting an xdm session.
