next email?
Thanks,

This is a great link:

Make sure you are reading the right one for your X version. The link is
for 4.1.0.

Make sure you have /usr/X11R6/lib/ in your /etc/ld.so.conf
If it is not listed, add it and run ldconfig.

Make sure your xkb has the right symlinks... Something like:
ln -s /var/lib/xkb /etc/X11/xkb/compiled
You can also define your fontpath manually with Font Path in your
Xconfig, instead of using the font server. It's fairly easy to install
new fonts...check out these links:

if you run x without FBDev, but you
could also give that a try. If you don't have that option specified in your x
config It will default as off.

Have you tried setting your VideoRam manually in the xconfig file under the
device section?
Also try manually setting the ChipSet name. Can you attach your XFree86.0.log?

I don't know for sure what is causing this. I have seen others with
similar problems. Make sure your Font Path is setup right. Example might
be adding a 'Font Path' to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias '

It might just be the time it takes to

That's a great suggestion!

you using DMA? My first instinct would be that this is a disk

Which XFree86 driver is this?

Is starting X a performance problem for you? Without a window
manager it's only takes a second for XFree86 to start over here.
I thought this was fairly quick already.

You could use the standalone read-edid utility.

Is there an X command which lists the supported VESA Video Modes for a

Not sure, but you should not have to copy config files anywhere...
simply call
a different serverconfig with the layout option...
No idea on monitor probing before X starts.
Can you give an example of th
resolution of each monitor.
