solution i found was (as root):
service gpm restart
but this one isn't terribly convenient.

The mouse needs to send a mouse replug event
suggested this is related to a mouse problem on earlier
kernel versions, but the description of that does not appear to be the same.
is there some other work-around for this? can anyone say whether this is a Gnome
problem, GPM problem, or some other?

i have RH9 installed on Dell PW410, P1110 monitor and Radeon 9K card, i always
log-in with Gnome. color, sharpness, et al, are all -much- better than Win2k, SP3.
you may have some other system problem.
