I was shutting down the comp because a thunder storm was a'coming.(Redhat 9.0 with newest version of XFree86, I think. Up until 6 weeks ago I performed all updates per RHN.) After I clicked the log out button, and before the GUI log in screen came up, it crashed. Ctrl-alt-delete to restart and got this:
lots of input/output errors concerning /var/log/wtmp. - chgrp failed to get attributes - chmod failed to get attributes Also - /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit: line 789: /var/log dmesg: input/output error - /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit: line 807: /var/log/ksyms.0: input/output error Starting system logger: -syslogd: /var/log/messages: I/O error -syslogd: /var/log/secure: I/O error -syslogd: /var/log/maillog: I/O error -syslogd: /var/log/cron: I/O error -syslogd: /var/log/spooler: I/O error -syslogd: /var/log/boot.log: I/O error And later on.... -start xfs [Failed] -execup: I/O error Then get a message: I cannot start x server... I tried to run x server config... Failed If I try at a bash prompt... $: startx Then I receive the following... - /usr/X11R6/bin/startx: line 133: xauth: command not found - /usr/X11R6/bin/startx: line 134: xauth: command not found - /usr/X11R6/bin/startx: line 133: xauth: command not found - /usr/X11R6/bin/startx: line 134: xauth: command not found Fatal server error: cannot open log file /var/log/XFree86.0.log ...giving up. - xinit: No such file or directory (errno2): unable to connect to X server - xinit: No such process (errno3): server error - /usr/X11R6/bin/startx: line 145: xauth: command not found It seems that ANY log is not accessible. I cannot access my /var/log/XFree86.0.log file. I am unable to access the /var/log directory, period. I have tried to re-instal XFree86 and no change. But, it sounds like more than just and XFree86 problem. Any idea's are needed. Thank you, I've been without my comp for a week now.
