Old kernel versions shouldn't be a problem. Your biggest
concern is that you get an XFree86 version compatible with your libc.
You can run the Xinstall.sh script (see the Install instructions
that come with XFree86) to tell you which binaries you should
be using. You generally want to ru
ppear. Most likely it is an interaction
with a kernel framebuffer device. Namely, the kernel framebuffer
device is setting some graphics card state that prevents all the
videoram from being accessible and the XFree86 driver is unaware
of this. This is unlikely to be an XAA issue.

The driver that comes with XFree86 should work. You just need
a much newer XFree86 version.
