When I run XFree86-4.5.0, driver "chips", at 800x600
on 1024x768 TFT flat panel with option "Stretch" I
have black border along right side about 4mm and bottom
about 3mm. XFree86.0.log reports five built-in 800x600
modelines but it's unclear which one is being used.

In the past we used a motherboard with i815 chipset. As we have to be
compatible with old monitors (some of them even no multisync) and a non
standard resolution of 1152x900, we used modelines with the i810 driver
to get this monitors work. Now we want to switch to a new motherboard
with i855GM

I seem to have a weird problem here.
With my current default settings (debian boots with console vga mode vga=0), X
launches with no problems.
However, when I add vga=791 as a kernel parameter at boot, and I try to launch
X, the monitor goes out of sync.

calculate their own mode lines and discard any that they don't
