my card was actually broken. that's why nothing worked. i installed windows
to see if it would work and it didn't. i got a new card which works
perfectly. thanks for anyone who tried to help.

i should have added that the problem is probably related to the motherboard.
i had to change my motherboard because the previous one was broken. i did
not have any problems with the nvidia drivers on my previous motherboard.
i also checked the nvidia forum and there seems to be a problem with KT

As a starting point, run XFree86 4.3 with the "nv" driver.
