I am having a positively horrible time trying to figure out what video card
and monitor to purchase for my Mandrake 8.1 Linux system.  My monitor just
went black and I've tried several replacement monitors, with annoying
problems with all of them.  I have an S3 Virge video card witih 4-meg and it
used to work perfectly well with my Sylvania 19" CRT, but when I tried a
direct replacement 19" Sylvania CRT (newer model) it was too bright and the
colors were all washed out and there was no way to turn down the brightness.

So, I took that back and got a Princeton 17" flat panel and while there are
many nice things about it, the image is no where near as clear as it was on
my old Sylvania 19" monitor or on the new one.  When I called tech support,
they told me that I needed at least 32-meg of ram to work with a flat panel
and I cannot figure out what video card to buy that will work reliably with
X86.

The more I read, the more confused I get.  Apparently newer versions of
Mandrake require older versions of X to work, and newer versions of X do
not work reliably with various video cards, and yet I am told that I need a
newer version video card to support this flat panel monitor.

How in the world can one sort all this out?

I can't find anyplace on the 'net, including at XFree86.org that provides
clear, simple, straight-forward guidance on what video cards are
recommended to use, which ones are known to work, and what steps
need to be taken to install a new video card and get it to work correctly.
