I've been using clamav for some time now and haven't had a problem with
it that I know of.
I use my own filter for it. If you want to give it a shot, see:

Yes this the best solution.
Create a tmp file under the mailbox one or the account one, move
files in it, then feed will 5K, download, and so on...

results in a malformatted mail file? If so, you should see the mail
client still reading but not getting anything delivered.
