IMO 417 errors indicate network errors In your server.tab file there is __no__ defaultSMTPgateways indicated, so then you'll have to give xmail some kind of intelligence where outbound mail has to go to. Check custdomains for this intelligence or smtpgw.tab of smtpfwd.tab for '*' rules.

Hi Michael, I'd suggest starting from scratch and work your way back up. Did you try to telnet your machine on port 25 (smtp port or outbound) 110 (pop3 port - mailbox access)? Is your network fully configured? Can you query DNS nameservers MX records? Does your ISP allow you to send out mail

IMHO you can re-install Xmail into a new dir. Copy paste all fixed information : *.tab, domains, etc files except Spool/* and *.locks files Then new Xmail should start and become stable with no information in = spool. When this is ok; you could start and manually copy paste the 'old' = spool
