I find the error ealier
marvin.networks.co.uk use Qmail
when a message be send by xmail to qmail
the error is given
but someone tell me it is not

try telnetting, nslookup etc directly from the mail server - IT IS a network
problem.

IMO 417 errors indicate network errors
In your server.tab file there is __no__ defaultSMTPgateways indicated, so
then you'll have to give xmail some kind of intelligence where outbound mail
has to go to. Check custdomains for this intelligence or smtpgw.tab of
smtpfwd.tab for '*' rules.

it's a network problem, can you ping an external server from your mail
server?
maybe a firewall blocks outgoing
